Today, was off to a slow start with breakfast and lunch at home until we time-traveled to 1970's socialist Yugoslavia at the Red History Museum—a really cool, interactive exhibit showcasing how communism shaped architecture, fashion, music, food, etc. in everyday life. One could open every cupboard, drawer, and door and touch everything inside (that would never fly in the US!!) and we had the whole place to ourselves the entire time! I'm a lover of anything to do with vintage interiors and antiques so this was right up my alley. My family has a low tolerance for museum visits but so far we have lucked out with the first two of the trip being winners. We will probably hold off on going to any more for a while as to not push our luck and burn them out so early in the trip!
Interesting Facts: In the 70s, Yugoslavia implemented the two-week vacation from work and encouraged employees to travel to local coastal towns to relax. Most people did not like the idea and chose not to, assuming their coworkers would be there too. They opted to hang out at home with their family and pick up odd jobs to make extra money or work on their house.
In communist Yugoslavia, there wasn’t mass religious public persecution like in the neighboring USSR, but rather a silent one. People working in government jobs and all personal working with children and youth weren’t allowed to publicly express their religion without a great possibility of losing their job. Catholic Baptisms, First Communions and weddings were held secretly.
Thank you, Martha! No fish, just toast made on their panini machine. Austin wants to cut his hair soon!
Hi Martha- It is salad with beets and toasted bread. George Foreman grills seem to be popular here which make great toast!
