Day 183 - Hangin' in Holbox

Updated: Mar 7, 2021

Thank you to my cousin, Caitlin, for recommended our current Mexican destination! Holbox (not Ho Box as shown in the photo!) is a little hidden gem located on the Northeast corner of the Yucatan. This 26 mile-long island is home to many whale sharks, flamingos, pelicans and funky beach vibes. Its inaccessibility has given it a slow start to mass tourism compared to its neighbors Cancun and Tulum.

The festive town lights up at night,

The nice variety of restaurants and eclectic beach shops are connected by sand roads topped with golf carts and ATVs. There is no pavement on the island! Non-chain resorts line the beach and offer many places to sunbathe and enjoy a pina colada or a healthy smoothie on their tropical grounds.

The kids' driving skills were on point for handling the advanced terrain of the island roads. All of that driving around in my parent's golf cart paid off! Clint and I were impressed by how calm we were when they were at the wheel.

Golf cart rental for a day to explore the island.

Luckily, we rented the golf cart the day before the rain came. Soupy, milky, grey water fills the streets and gigantic potholes where only brave individuals wade through the ankle-to calf-deep water walking around town. We chose to make this our lazy day inside and pack in as much school as we can, except for my one errand of getting the laundry. Mexico has been the first place where we haven't had washers in our accommodations so we will be taking our clothes to the local laundry shops for the rest of our trip. No more hanging on my beloved clothes line!

Our hotel stay included a daily breakfast, but we didn't know that it would combine lunch too—in one sitting! Each person picks one item from the breakfast menu and one item from the lunch menu and they bring it to you to eat all at the same time for kitchen closes at 11 am. Our enchiladas will be arriving in a minute!

Relaxing and cooling off with a smoothie at one of the fancy resorts.

Waiting for the ferry to Holbox.

Swings are a thing in Mexico. Every town has them in restaurants, bars, hotels, beaches.

The food has been so delicious in Mexico... though eat at your own risk! We have all had our share of upset stomachs. This dish was a winner!
